Review: Motorola Q

Motorola_Q

"The Motorola Q is being promoted as the thinnest and coolest looking smartphone on the market and it just might be exactly that. It's thin like many standard cell phones, such as the Razr and Slvr but this phone is anything but standard. It runs Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition. With that, you get many of the applications you are used to on your desktop. This includes Internet Explorer, Outlook, Media Player, Calendar, Contacts and Messenger. It will sync your information with your desktop using Microsoft Activesync. If you haven't tried out Windows Mobile yet, give it a whirl. It's one of the best mobile operating systems out there.

The Q also offers what you would expect from any cell phone. It has a built-in 1.3 megapixel camera. It takes decent pictures but it won't replace your digital camera. It also has bluetooth that supports any standard earpiece as well as bluetooth stereo headphones. The Q has a miniSD memory card slot on the side....

Review: Verizon Wireless CDM-8945

Verizon_CDM8945

"The underpowered Verizon Wireless 8945 makes clear calls, but its features don't measure up well against its competition's. Given its hefty price, we can't recommend this phone. The 4-ounce 8945 is moderately handsome, looking like a 3.5 by 1.9 by 0.9-inch slab of obsidian. The plastic case feels solid, and the hinge has a nice snap to it. Flip it open and you will see a thoroughly average 176-by-220 color screen and a keypad of rather cheap-feeling buttons with green backlights in the corners. A quick-access camera button, volume buttons, and the TransFlash memory card slot are located on the sides....

Review: Motorola's Pink RAZR V3c for Verizon

Motorola RAZR Pink

"Physically, the RAZR V3c looks exactly like the original V3 - with one minor exception. At the time that Motorola's designers were first working on the V3c for the Korean market, the megapixel camera module they had to work with was just a bit too thick. As a result of that, they had to add that bulge around the camera lens in order to get the module to fit.

Otherwise, the physical attributes are more or less the same. The V3c weighs 97g (3.4oz), and measures 98mm x 53mm x 16mm (3.9" x 2.1" x .6"). The top half of the folder design has a volume rocker switch and the smart key button on the left side, and the voice dialing/recorder button on the right side. The external sub-display is still a 65k STN unit that is usable, but not particularly nice. The lower half of the folder houses the battery, antenna and speaker (in the bulge below the keypad), and the miniUSB port that is used for power, data, and wired headsets. The user replaceable battery, with its metal cover, and a rubber covered external antenna port are located on the back....

Review: Verizon LG VX8100

lg_vx8100

This phone is designed for music, but physically, no one is going to confuse it with any of the iPod models. At 3.58 by 1.92 by 1.03 inches and 4.16 ounces, the VX8100 is short and dumpy. There are music transport controls -- play/pause, FF/skip and RW/skip on the front flap so you can control your tunes without opening the phone, and the speakers are mounted on either side of the clamshell hinge, meaning you'll get the same stereo sound of music, ring tones or speakerphone chatting if the flap is up or down.

Volume toggle, voice memo key and the stereo headphone jack are located on the left spine, the camera key and miniSD slot on the right. There's a 1.2-inch external color LCD that clearly displays time, date and phone signal strength and status. The VX8100's stumpy antenna makes tight pocket fit awkward, and it doesn't telescope.

Review: Motorola E815 phone for Verizon

Motorola_e815

The Motorola E815 has it all in a large clamshell handset with a small price tag. The Moto features a good 1.3 megapixel camera, EVDO, MP3 player, a vivid inner display, TransFlash memory expansion slot, Bluetooth and speakerphone. It was introduced in the summer of 2005 and sells for $199 or less with contract, not bad given the feature set.

On the large side for a clamshell phone, the E815 is bigger than the LG VX8100 with which it competes, though it's smaller than the relatively large LG VX9800 (The V) which houses a QWERTY keyboard. It has a large, bright and colorful inner display and a decent outer display. The phone uses Motorola's standard UI (user interface) which features large icons and easy to read text. Though not as incredibly easy to use as the afore mentioned LG phones with their "Verizon-ized UI", anyone who's used a Moto in the past few years will have no trouble getting around...

Motorola to benefit from price war over Razr

Motorola RAZR V3 Magenta

Verizon, Cingular cutting prices for popular handset

Motorola Inc. stands to gain from a price war between the two largest U.S. wireless operators over the popular Razr cellular phone this holiday season.

As Verizon launches the first version of the popular handset tailored to its technology, known as CDMA, arch-rival Cingular has been slashing prices on its models, first introduced a year ago.

Cingular, the nation’s largest cellular carrier, is offering up the Razr to subscribers for as little $99, after a 33% rebate. Verizon responded yesterday with an extra $20 rebate for its new version of the phone, bringing its price to $179.

“I’m sure Cingular did it to take some of the wind out of Verizon’s launch,” says analyst Albert Lin of American Technology Research...

GPS VZ Navigator service now offered by Verizon Wireless

Motorola V325 GPS

Verizon Wireless is joining the GPS party already attended by Sprint/Nextel, with the launch of its new GPS VZ Navigator service. Verizon has teamed up with Networks in Motion, making use of the company’s AtlasBook software. Using cell phone towers to triangulate your approximate position, your phone then connects to GPS satellites for more precise location information. Then, Nateq maps are downloaded onto your mobile (via Verizon’s “Get it Now” service applets), and well, it’s up to you to figure out what to do from there.

The VZ Navigator service can be had for $10 a month, or for your shorter road trips, $3 a day. And yes, you will be charged (on top) for download charges related to your retrieving of maps. Another bummer is that incoming calls will interrupt data transmission; so, tell your mom that you’ll call her back, after you figure out where the heck you are...

LG VX9800 review from Mobile Tracker

LG 9800

This week we took a look at the LG VX9800, a high-end EV-DO enabled handset from Verizon Wireless that has had some visibility thanks to a large advertising campaign. Think of it as the Sidekick for Verizon Wireless--QWERTY keyboard, landscape oriented screen and a larger than most form factor. It also has that wow factor once the keyboard is revealed. But can it perform?

My first impression of the LG VX9800 was the size, this is no sub-compact meant to gracefully rest in a pocket. There is no way to hide it, the VX9800 is a big handset. Think Sidekick big. But after opening the handset to reveal the larger screen and QWERTY keyboard, the size starts to make more sense. The included stereo speakers on the inside of the phone work nicely with the overall design and provide great sound though I wish they could have been a bit louder.

There are a lot of buttons on the VX9800 thanks to its dual form factor, I counted 79. But that is a bit inflated because you only use one set at a time, when the phone is closed for example there are 26 keys which is about average.

Check out the photo section below to see a comparison shot of the VX9800 and two other phones I had in my office, the Samsung e635 and the Kyocera Slider Sonic...

Motorola's sharp new line of RAZRs

Motorola RAZR Pink

Americans love the Motorola RAZR so it shouldn't come as any surprise that Motorola extended the brand today with four new RAZRs, all sure to be on sale for the holiday season.

The most exciting new phone is the RAZR V3c. Motorola won't talk about it and Verizon isn't even acknowledging that the phone exists. Motorola has said that the phone will support BREW and the only nationwide carrier with BREW is Verizon. It should hit shelves by the end of the year. Although the V3c looks like a typical steel-gray RAZR, it has much-improved specs: a 1.23-megapixel camera (previous RAZRs have been VGA), high-speed EV-DO data connectivity, and 30 MB of internal memory. You'll also finally find Bluetooth on the RAZR V3c, though if indeed Verizon picks it up, we're pretty sure Bluetooth file transfer will be disabled (as has been their custom with all previous Bluetooth-enabled Verizon phones), leaving the wireless technology solely for use with headsets.

Multimedia phones: Verizon vs. Motorola

LG-VX98001

Verizon LG VX9800
At first blush, it looks like an ordinary candy bar style cell phone: rectangular-shaped with a keypad and display on the front. But it's hinged along the left edge and flips open like a miniature notebook computer, exposing a super-sharp 2.5-inch screen and a thumb keyboard. Flanking the screen is a pair of tiny, but surprisingly decent-sounding stereo speakers.
You can dial with the phone open or closed; if you open it the call goes into speaker mode, which is one of the best sounding speakerphones I've encountered. The phone's performance is good and LG's (www.us.lge.com) user interface is intuitive and straightforward...

The VX9800 has a long laundry list of compelling features, including a color outer display, a stunning 320 x 256 pixel landscape oriented inner display, Text to speech, EVDO, excellent speakerphone, Bluetooth, stereo speakers, 1.3 megapixel camera with flash, 56 megs of available memory, miniSD card slot, MP3 player, voice recorder, Verizon Wireless Sync compatibility, extremely sturdy build and best of all a QWERTY keyboard with dedicated number row inside.

Verizon targets this $299 with new activation phone at those who need HTML browsing and easy messaging but don't want the price tag, added heft or complexity of a PDA phone such as the Samsung i730 Pocket PC Phone or the Palm Treo 650. The high resolution 262,000 color inner display, stereo sound and strong performance are also perfect for multimedia mavens, and it's currently the best phone on the market to take advantage of VCast media on Verizon's EVDO network.
