Review: Samsung MM-A900

Samsung_MM-A900

"This svelte, clamshell phone looks just like the Razr--and it includes some of the same impressive features. PC World Canada rating: 71 Good.

A spitting image of Motorola's black Razr phone, Samsung's MM-A900 bears the same sleek clamshell design and an equally vibrant and roomy internal LCD. (One major difference between these models: Samsung's model is only available in the U.S., so customs and unlocking fees are a definite factor when comparing it to other models). And, for the most part, the two standard cell phones carry the same impressive features. But, the MM-A900 suffers from short talk-time battery life, sub-par audio and dull photos generated from its 1.3-megapixel camera.

Review: Motorola Slvr L7

motorola_slvr_l7_horse

"This cell phone/iPod hybrid works well for making and receiving calls, but it doesn't excel as an audio player. PC World Canada rating: 74 Good.

There's a lot to like about Motorola's Slvr L7 (another phone you'll have to get from the U.S. and unlock if you want to use it here in Canada), the company's latest cell-phone/iPod hybrid. It's pretty, sleek and fairly easy to use for making and receiving calls; and its integration of iPod features is a great extra. Unfortunately, it doesn't excel as a music listening device.

"Instant messaging and email aficionados will like this phone's capabilities--and its stow-away keyboard. PC World Canada rating: 72 Good.

Looking for a cell phone that lets you stay connected via email and instant messenger? You don't need a pricey PDA hybrid phone to get the messaging features you crave. Consider the LG F9200 (available in the U.S., unlocking required for Canada). This candy bar-style standard cell phone features a hidden QWERTY keyboard, which slides out from beneath the handset, enabling you to type messages much more easily....

Review: Motorola i870

Motorola_i870

"As can be said of Nextel phones in general, if you're looking for a phone for personal use only, the i870 is probably not the best choice. However, for business users, the ability to store and synchronize calendars and contact info along with the walkie-talkie PTT are strong selling points. The i870 stands apart from the usual super-chunky, ruggedized Nextel pack: it's somewhat less bulky, has a good camera, memory expansion slot and an MP3 player with stereo headphone jack. If you're looking for a feature phone for your workforce, Nextel now has the answer: the Motorola i870. Though it might lack the sex appeal of feature phones from other carriers, it has excellent build quality, good battery life and works reliably....

"The device itself is striking, and seems solidly constructed with a metal grille for the speaker phone, matt blue/black finish and a noticeable lack of flimsiness.

The full Qwerty keyboard is easy to get used to, although bigger thumbs may find hitting relatively small keys hard to hit every time. The raised buttons are easy to find, and we adapted quickly to pressing out messages with our thumbs.

Dialling numbers was more awkward but a thumb dial on the right of the device makes scrolling up and down documents easy....

Nokia N72 Announced for Emerging Markets

Nokia_n72

"The Nokia N72, announced yesterday, is Nokia's new Nseries fashion phone for emerging markets. Rafe in his Nokia N72 preview summarises and explains the phones features, capabilities and market positioning and concludes that the Nokia N72 could be a best seller.

The Nokia N72 specifications are not at the cutting edge - there is no 3G or WiFi, 'only' a 2 megapixel camera, a 'low' resolution screen, and it runs the 'old' version of S60 (2nd Edition). However this phone has it's own significance and it should outsell any of the other Nseries devices announced thus far. Rafe looks in more detail at the recently announced Nokia N72....

Review: Motorola Razr V3c

Motorola RAZR v3c

"Motorola's Razr is one of the most popular cell phones in Canada-and I can see whiy: this standard cell phone looks great, offers high-speed web browsing and has a vibrant screen. It's not perfect, however. I encountered poor battery life and inconsistent call quality, plus I got lacklustre photos from its camera.

The Razr V3c I tested improves on the original V3 in a couple of ways. First, it comes with a 1.3-megapixel camera. Second, it supports the almost-broadband-level EvDO network, which means faster page loads when you're using the internet browser.

The VK Mobile VK2020 phone ($399) is that hot—head-turning, eye-popping hot—so those who take it out on the town will be able to overlook its flaws.

The VK2020 makes the Motorola SLVR L7 look like a house brick. It will turn heads, attract comments, and convince good-looking people that you're worth talking to. At 3.7 by 1.9 by 0.3 inches and 1.9 ounces, you can almost balance it on a finger. It feels solid, not cheap, and has the same flat keypad with raised rubber numbers that the SLVR does, although the keys are much tinier on the VK2020. Review: Motorola A840.

"What defines a true global traveller or a mobile professional? A suitcase with important papers, a bag filled with essentials, a good suit, sunglasses, ofcourse a passport and a mobile phone. But not just any run of the mill kind. After all, the cellphone is an important addition to yourself, when you greet your client.

So, say bonjour to the Motorola A840. It's one of those phones which likes to say hello to both a CDMA and a GSM network. So, you could use the services of a CDMA operator like Tata Indicom and a GSM provider like Hutch in one phone - but not at the same time. All you have to do is go to settings. Select the phone mode, choose your operator and voila. This is a great option when travelling between country and city networks. Motorola unveiled the device with much fanfare last summer and had said it would hit shelves during the first quarter of this year. Review: Samsung SGH-P300

Samsung_SGH-P300

"Phones like the Samsung SGH-P300 get their appeal from their compact sizes and low weights. While we have seen similar looking "credit card" type phones in the past, none of them have really offered a complete spec sheet that could compete with other normal handsets of their time like the P300 can.

Calculator jokes aside, the P300 shows that Samsung can make handsets that are seriously small and thin - and a bit novel. That's a nice change for a company known best for a sea of silver clamshells, and more recently for a number of Motorola RAZR/SLVR wanna be devices. The P300's minimalist design isn't for everybody, but it will certainly have its appeal to many. The question is, does the device manage to offer more than just the design? Read on to find out....

The phone has some other cool features, so you’ll still be enjoying a decent unit far after the appeal of “the small phone” is gone. The camera here is 2 megapixels, which is beyond impressive for such a slim body. Unfortunately, even Samsung couldn’t pull it off perfectly, and the camera module part of the body is slightly thicker than 6.9mm. The screen is 1.9” in size, with 262,000 colors. That rather small screen will be your navigational guide to the built in media player of the X828. treo_700p

From the folks at Engadget. -Ed.

"We were sort of hoping against hope that Palm would officially take the wraps off their new Palm-powered Treo 700p here at CTIA this week, but a highly trusted source has confirmed for us that they won't be making an official announcement until Monday, May 15th (or thereabouts). That date could slip, of course, but it does jibe with the May 28th launch date that's been floating about the interweb....

Nokia 6126 Unveiled Today

The feature-filled Nokia 6126 phone offers Nokia quality, ease-of-use and style in a desirably slim package

Las Vegas, NV, USA - When Nokia (NYSE: NOK) engineers were tasked with designing a sleek, fold-style handset that did not compromise on quality, ease-of-use, style or features, they took up the challenge and delivered a product that changes the conventional wisdom that a slim phone cannot be as powerful as it is beautiful. Today, Nokia unveils the result of this engineering challenge, the quad-band (GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900) Nokia 6126 phone. Featuring a graceful tapered design that averages a mere 17mm (.67 inches) from top to bottom, it still manages to deliver a wide range of the most desired mobile features which are easily accessible via Nokia's hallmark intuitive user interface. The Nokia 6126 phone is expected to be available in North American markets during the 2nd quarter of 2006.

Design
Along with its slim, tapered profile - the Nokia 6126 phone is also just 48mm (1.9 inches) wide and weighs in at a featherweight 112 grams (3.9 ounces). While these compact dimensions make the Nokia 6126 phone easy to pick up, the luxurious soft-touch finish makes it equally hard to put down. Besides the soft-touch black finish, the Nokia 6126 phone can also be found in silver with white, beige or red accents.

For an added touch of fun and convenience, the Nokia 6126 phone also integrates a push-to-open button into its design. Located at the edge of the hinge, the button, when depressed, allows the phone to automatically glide into the open position. This not only makes for convenient one-handed operation, but satisfies the desire to create a level of 'phone envy' among friends.

Features
A full suite of the most popular features has been engineered into the Nokia 6126 phone. To enjoy music on the go, the Nokia 6126 phone includes a digital music player that supports a variety of formats including MP3, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+. With an optional 1 GB microSD card, approximately 1,000 songs can be stored on the hot-swappable memory card and enjoyed using an optional wired stereo headset, or for the ultimate in convenience, through an optional wireless stereo headset using Bluetooth technology.

Quad-band GSM/EDGE technology allows the Nokia 6126 phone to be used on virtually all GSM systems around the world (subject to operator roaming agreements), while Nokia's industry benchmark RF engineering maximizes performance to get the most out of these global networks.

The integrated 1.3 megapixel camera includes 8x digital zoom and a full screen portrait mode viewfinder that lets users see exactly what they are capturing. In video mode, the Nokia 6126 can capture video clips that can be saved, sent, or used as video ring tones on both the internal and external displays. Additional features include streaming audio and video support, built-in 3D games, including a 3D version of the classic 'Snake' game, local and remote synchronization of contact, calendar and to-do lists and enhanced voice features including speaker-independent name dialing.

Ease-of-use
The Nokia 6126 phone implements the all-new third edition of Nokia's popular Series 40 user interface. This user interface builds upon the intuitive menu structure that has made Nokia Series 40-based handsets perennial best-sellers around the world. It also adds 'Active Standby Mode', which allows the idle screen to keep owners informed of calendar and to-do items and to provide quick access to the most-used applications.

To make this powerful functionality easily accessible, the Nokia 6126 phone includes the latest in human interface technology. The main display features an ultra-crisp 2.2 inch 16.7 million True Color TFT 320 x 240 pixel QVGA display to make icons, text and images incredibly sharp and true-to-life. The external display is a full 262,000 color 128 x 160 pixel screen - which delivers even higher quality output than the main display found on many phone models. For fast, accurate data entry, the Nokia 6126 phone employs a unique dual level keypad that uses a raised area on each key which allows for the largest possible key size, yet still delivers a natural space between keys for a positive tactile response.

Review: Verizon Wireless CDM-8945

Verizon_CDM8945

"The underpowered Verizon Wireless 8945 makes clear calls, but its features don't measure up well against its competition's. Given its hefty price, we can't recommend this phone. The 4-ounce 8945 is moderately handsome, looking like a 3.5 by 1.9 by 0.9-inch slab of obsidian. The plastic case feels solid, and the hinge has a nice snap to it. Flip it open and you will see a thoroughly average 176-by-220 color screen and a keypad of rather cheap-feeling buttons with green backlights in the corners. A quick-access camera button, volume buttons, and the TransFlash memory card slot are located on the sides....

Review: Motorola Slvr L7

Motorola slvr

"THE new Motorola L7 mobile phone is cool, compact and—for some reason known only to the tech company’s designers in Schaumburg, Illinois— it attracts paper clips.

Motorola also calls the latest of its razor-thin phones “Slvr” (pronounced “sliver,” not “silver”). With it, the company hopes to snag mobile users who don’t like clamshell units like the now iconic “Razr.” The L7/Slvr is a candy-bar phone, meaning all its main features are on one side, where the screen is also located...

Bellwave A308 Coming Soon

Bellwave_A308

"....the Bellwave A308 is your standard GSM phone, with features like a 2 Mega Pixel camera, as well as support for an MP3 player. Aside from that there is also a MiniSD slot for expandable memory, as well as Bluetooth connectivity. With all these features it may as well substitute the RAZR, but then again who am I kidding, with such popularity that the RAZR has nothing can truly replace it. The only thing that remains questionable is the quality and the price of the product. Bellwave will cost quite a bit less than an equivalent handset from Motorola, but bear in mind that build quality is questionable....
